What is a Fluid Coupling?

A fluid coupling is a hydrodynamic device used to transmit rotational power between shafts in mechanical systems. It consists of a housing filled with fluid (usually oil) and two turbine-like components: the impeller (connected to the input shaft) and the runner (connected to the output shaft). When the impeller rotates, it creates a flow of fluid that drives the runner, transferring torque from the input to the output shaft without direct mechanical contact.

Fluid couplings are valued for their ability to provide smooth power transmission, reduce mechanical shock, and allow for controlled startup and speed variation. They are commonly used in applications such as conveyors, fans, pumps, and automotive transmissions, with capacities reaching up to 1750 hp (1300 kW).
